Description:
Abstract:
A program to measure waves, water levels, and currents near the Chandeleur Islands, Louisiana and adjacent berm construction site was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) during summer and autumn 2010. The Chandeleur Islands have been the subject of ongoing USGS studies of coastal erosion and land loss. The berm was being constructed by the State of Louisiana in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The oceanographic measurements accompany USGS observations of geomorphic response to storms of the berm and Chandeleur Islands. For more information see <https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fa=10055>, <https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fa=10069>, <https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fa=10092>.
Purpose:
This dataset provides oceanographic measurements for use in assessment how coastal erosion on barrier Islands and constructed berms may be effected by storms. Instrumented moorings were deployed at four sites on 10 July 2010, serviced 11-14 September 2010, and finally recovered on 7-8 November 2010. These data will be used to assess model calculations of waves, water levels, and currents near the Chandeleur Islands. The locations, deployment depths, sensor type and parameters measured during the deployment are presented in the table displayed by the Basic Sampling Interval link on the stellwagen server (<https://stellwagen.er.usgs.gov/GOMEX_CI.html>).

Logical_Consistency_Report: Data are logically consistent
Completeness_Report:
The data have been edited to remove outlying points and data recorded when the instruments were out of the water before and after deployment. At site CI-3 about half of the current-meter data were missing from the first deployment period and because the instrument performance was intermittent, the data were recovered as three files instead of one continuous file. The pressure measurements from this instrument were incorrect for both deployments, so water level data are missing from the ADCP files and wave data are not available. All the other data are usable.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The mooring deployment locations (latitude and longitude) were recorded based on the vessel's onboard GPS navigation systems. The accuracy of each system is better than 15 meters.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Bottom-mounted sensors have instrument_height attributes (meters above bottom) measured prior to deployment. The sensor height above bottom is accurate to within 1 cm, but the depth (representing the initial measurement depth) is only accurate to about 1 meter due to tidal fluctuations and use of nominal water depth. If the sensor acquires data in bins by depth (ADCP, PCADP), those depths are accurate to a few centimeters relative to each other. Sedimentation or scouring around the platform may change the vertical position over the course of a deployment by as much as 20 cm. The data is not adjusted to reflect any temporal changes in elevation of the sensor.

Process_Description:
FIELD PROGRAM Four sites were occupied for two adjacent time periods from July 8 through November 7 or 8 2011. Each platform was out of the water for about a day in mid-September for battery replacement, data offload and other refurbishment. Separate platform IDs were assigned for each deployment at each site. Sites 1-3 were East of the Island at varying distances offshore in water depths of 13 to 30 meters. Site 6 was West of the Island, deployed at 4 meters depth. The platform IDs are as follows: Site 1- 889, 893; Site 2- 890, 895; Site 3- 891, 897; Site 6- 892, 899. An upward looking TRDI ADCP was deployed at each site to measure ocean current and wave conditions. All the data except for the waves parameters from both deployments at site 3 are usable.

Process_Description:
DATA PROCESSING Data processing was conducted using the proprietary software for each instrument, and (or) specialized software developed by the USGS. The proprietary software was often used to download data from the instruments and export the data to ASCII-files. Post-processing of the raw binary or ASCII files was accomplished using USGS software developed in the MATLAB (<http://www.mathworks.com/>) programming language. Data were first decoded and calibrated from instrument-specific formats and units to the EPIC-standard NetCDF format (<http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/epic/>) and scientific units. Data were carefully checked for instrument malfunctions and then edited. The beginning and end of each data series were truncated to remove data collected out of water. The data files include all variables recorded at the basic sampling interval. The processing steps on the ADCP at site 3 that produced 3 sections were the same as what would have been done if it had functioned properly and generated one file. These data have been edited to remove outlying points and data recorded when the instruments were out of the water before and after deployment. These data were released as provisional to enable their timely use in post-spill modeling efforts. They will be reviewed for Best basic Version (BBV) approval as time allows.
