Chandeleur Islands Oceanographic Measurements

Description: A program to measure waves, water levels, and currents near the Chandeleur Islands, Louisiana and adjacent berm construction site was conducted by the US Geological Survey (USGS) during summer and autumn 2010. The Chandeleur Islands have been the subject of ongoing USGS studies of coastal erosion and land loss. The berm was being constructed by the State of Louisiana in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The oceanographic measurements accompany USGS observations of geomorphic response to storms of the berm and Chandeleur Islands. Instrumented moorings were deployed at four sites on 10 July 2010, serviced between 11 and 14 September 2010, and finally recovered on 7 and 8 November 2010. These data will be used to assess model calculations of waves, water levels, and currents near the Chandeleur Islands.

Quality assessment: These data were originally posted here on 13 December, 2010. They passed the Best Basic Version review on Sept. 4, 2012. The files have been trimmed to exclude pre- and post-deployment measurements. Complete data sets for 10 July through 7 November 2010 were obtained at three of the four sites. At the fourth, southernmost site, about half of the current-meter data were missing from the first deployment period and because the instrument performance was intermittent, the data were recovered as three files instead of one continuous file. The pressure measurements from this instrument were incorrect for both deployments, so water level data are missing from the ADCP files and wave data are not available. The instrument was re-deployed with the bad pressure sensor, so there is no wave data available for the second deployment either.

Any corrected data will be posted to this site.

Duration: July - November 2010
